Levelland Pop Up Pantry>
Cactus Cares was excited to partner with the South Plains agriculture community, South Plains Food Bank, and Hillside Christian Church to host another Pop-Up Food Pantry in Levelland, Texas on Saturday, May 30th. At the event, 500 packs were given out to families in need on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Each pack contained:
1 box of canned goods – donated by South Plains Food Bank
1 Dairy Box - donated by South Plains Food Bank
1 dozen eggs – donated by Cal-Maine Foods
1 fresh produce box - donated by South Plains Food Bank
3 gals. of milk – donated by Sarah Farms
5 lbs. of ground beef – donated by Cactus Cares and Red Raider Meats
5 lbs. of potatoes – donated by Larsen Farms
Fresh fruit – donated by United Market Street
“We are excited that Hillside Christian Church and Cactus Cares asked the South Plains Food Bank to partner with them to distribute food to families in Levelland as a result of COVID-19,” David Weaver, chief executive office at the South Plains Food Bank, said. “There are so many families in our communities who never expected to need help with food. Then the economic effects of the Coronavirus shut down and turned their lives upside down. We could not address the needs of our community without caring partners who willingly give time, food and funds to make sure families are fed.”
According to the SPFB, requests for food assistance have increased nearly 20-fold throughout the Panhandle network since mid-March. In addition, SPFB’s distribution has increased 61% since March, and since April 12th distributed over 1,000,000 pounds of food, when usually around this time distribute about 500,000 to 700,000 pounds.
“The beef industry is grateful to provide high quality protein to those who have been affected by this pandemic,” said Wayne Craig, executive director of Cactus Cares. “During this time each of our industries has a commitment to continue their focus on feeding a hungry world- family, friends, and neighbors. This is just one more way for us to accomplish our mission.”
Other supporters of the event included Cal-Maine Foods, City of Levelland, Hillside Christian Church, Larsen Farms, Red Raider Meats, Sarah Farms, South Plains Food Bank, Texas Cattle Feeders Association and United Market Street.
